Titles Change

Our original idea was to have a variation of names displayed in different ways, as shown below:

We conducted some audience research by showing two people the title sequence and asked both of the individuals their opinion. Both reported that the names shown in the titles should be the same style and position instead of random positions and styles on screen.

We have decided to standardise the names in the title sequence by keeping them in the same style

We changed the titles accordingly and we believe they are easier to watch.

I (Joseph) asked a friend of ours who is a graphic designer who recently graduated from university her opinion on the production via email:

These were her comments visible in the screen dump below:

After watching your video 'Duplicate' I have some constructive feedback to give it a little bit of extra colour and theming running through.

1. There seemed to be a lack of 'colour' in the film. It's emphasis seemed to be black and white but this wasn't continual throughout the film - just random pieces of stills to black and white. However the main thing people would remember about the film would be the association with the blood at the end - only the viewer would recognise that the blood determines which person is the duplicate and which one is the real thing - this would mean that red could be the 3rd primary colour.

2. Don't mix up the titles with different placement effects - pick one and stick to it - I would say the one with the name on top and the mirrored version underneath as this is the main one you should use - it just makes more sense to keep the same 'theme' all the way through.

3. Add a bit of red to the titles - keep that red theme going throughout - it will make that final scene mean more and stand out.

They were the main points

these are the 2 new title ideas i (joseph) have created, i will explain how i made each of these titles in:

Documents for Title Sequence

Both ideas incorporate the ideas given by the graphic designer, that more colour is needed and as oliver has already explained the orientation of the titles.

Based on these points i have changed the titles:, firstly i have done audience research by asking my Facebook friends their opinion of which title should be used, it was a unanimous vote all for the first of the 2. the reason for posting it on facebook was due to the cross section of people, for other research we have done we have only asked "a level media students in barnsley" this is very limiting demographic, it gives us very little feedback from a broad audience demographic. This was the main reason for the facebook post however it did not work as planned, only a level media students, from barnsley have commented, We are still going to run with this research however it is not very concordant, at least we know students from Barnsley like it.

Film Draft

This is a draft of the film just before it is finished, as you will notice the radio broadcast has no video footage due to re-filming that needs to take place. A few tweaks and changes are to be made before the final product.

Film Radio Trailer Ideas

After lising to a number of radio trailers i have come up with a number of ideas of my own that could be used in the creation of are own radio trailer.

Here are some of the ideas that could be used in the script of the film.

Radio Trailer Research

Both of the above are examples of radio trailers for films, although both are quite old ,they still show us what differing convection's are required for a trailer. Indicating areas to be considered  for our own productions.
Both of the trailers share a number of similarities in production.
They both include a voice over, that introduce a potential audience to the key details that must be known about the film. For example, the film name, actors starring in the film, date of release, and an overall idea of what the film is about including the possible genre.
Most of the radio trailers also contain a key quote from the film, as well as a number of carefully selected sound bites such as can be heard in the radio trailer above for Star Wars.
On their own these sound bites don’t make much sens, and thus do not give away too much about the film however they must give enough information to stimulate the potential  audience, to generate interest in the content of the film. All of these points are present in the two trailers above.

Radio Trailer Research

Doctor Who Radio Trailer

This trailer establishes what the program is and what its all about. When The Doctor says 'How fast can you run?' it establishes a sense of action feeling to it because running is what happenes in an action-genred production, running from enemies, running for someone, running under pressure, etc. The heavy breathing that Amy does also establishes that the program will have tension and panic involved. It also leaves the listener on an unknown riddle which creates that cliffhanger feeling to 'entice' them to watch the program. The voice over at the end gives the details of the show so that the listener of the trailer  does not miss it.

This trailer begins with the time and day of the program and starts with one line to attract interest about the secrets of the show when The Doctor says 'The Time Lords are returning!' The show is established as a sequence of danger when The Doctor warns  'You've seen my enemies Wilf, the Time Lords are more dangerous than any of them!' The voice over says 'The Tenth Doctor's Final Chapter!' establishes a grand finale to the series which creates a higher sense of adventure, action and suspense; compelling the audience to watch the show. The shouts of battle are calls to war which creates a battle to be won, or lost. The effects on the voices are added for the dramatic effect which will always create more suspense and tension.

Both trailers highlight the most important points of the production, combined with effects and music to create a merge of exciting advertising.

Poster Research

The Poster for a film is a very important advertising tool. It could be the first introduction the audience recieve to the film. we find film posters on road billboards or at bus stops.

A film Trailer will give a better overall view of the film, but people are far more likely to see a film poster. In effect the film poster is used to entice people into going one step further and researching the film i.e. by searching for details of it online and by looking for the trailer (if it has one). The film Poster creates awerness of the film, it should also have elemets of appeal to it, if the poster looks unexciting or 'dull' people won't think anything of it, the first obvous thing is a poster need to be eye catching.

Posters are used to give poeple hints as to the contect of the film, it also hylights the actors and director. this should give people a better idea of if they want to see the film, for example, if their favourite direcor or actor is part of the film. Other elements within the poster hylight important aspects of the film such as it's genera, this can be see though the visula contect, ie if it contains explosions ans guns in the poster it is likely an action film as opposed to if it contains a man and a woman about to kiss or hugging then it is more liely to be a romantic film.
different aspects of the poster govern what the content of the film will be.

Other things come into play, such as the lighting and colour of the poster, posters with a darker backround and less contrast are more likely to be horror as apposed to a brightly coloured disney film. Bright colours and more light reveals that the mood of the film will be more comedy of family based.

Many posters are also often steriotypes (unless they are comdey who often play upon subverted steriotypes). The steriotypical dress of a character reveals the nature of what thier role will be winin the film so for example a man wearing boxing gloves suggest he will be fighting. The directors often have characters within the film who they want to be kept a secret untill the films releace, these charactes are often towards the back pulling no obvious pose.

The facial exressions,'pose' and position of characters winthin a poster also give some idea of the hyerachy within the film, who plays more dominet roles/less dominent.

One very important aspect off all that i have said is that despite it being so braod as to what must be included. It must also be very subtle, posters souldn't reveal any of the plot, it shoudl hylight eliments within a film that people may like helping them to decided to watch it or not.

Finally film posters have writing on them, this reveals things like the distribution company, the director, the website and leading role within the film, actors, the director, the producer, sometimes the writer or the score maker and often the release date. Usually this infomration will appear in an ultra thin condensed form at the bottom of the poster and on the back of Dvd's it is usually almost identical to the first few credits you see at the end of the film. often this information will be a grey colour and although it is very 'squashed' it can still be read. very usefull for poster editors to cram all the relevent information into a poster.

Our Film Duplicate is a science fiction film so natrually i have decided to analyse a scienfiction films poster:
In this Poster we can se it has a very 'metal' look to it often a lot of science fiction films have content in them such as advanced machinery uin this case the transformers although more steriotypical science fiction films are set in space and therefore have the black and silver colour scheeme. they also tent to have a lot of blue as part of the make up of the metallic look to it. Our film in it's self will have a blue tinge to it throguhout, this is done dileberatly to create this metallic feel. We can see that the poster hylights key elemts within the film, the imiage of earth in space and the transformers reavelas it's science fiction content, the main characters are the robots, but also the shia labeouf playing the main character has a centered postion in the poster showing his dominence over the other people and again the transformers above him showing their dominence, it all reveals the hyerichy. At the bottom of the poster we can see the ultra thin writing which reveals the releace date and the main people within the films, the key actors, the director. At the bottom although you cannot see it very well it has a website with more infomation about the film and also the distribution campany, in this case paramount. The punch line at the top 'their war, our world' reveals even more of the film what content the audience may expect from the film. we can see it has little contrast pulling out the key blue, black and silver eliments revealing it to be a science fiction film, it also hylights the orange tinge that you would expect from an action film poster.

other examples of sciecne fiction film posters:

all these are great examples of science fiction posters, they all have very similar themes as mentioned in my analysis of the transformers poster.

Poster Research

A film poster is is sometimes the first introduction that an audience has to a film. Because of this it must not only attract the audience, but also describe the basic narrative of the film,  genre of the film and the starring cast of the production.
These must be displayed clearly, and presented in a format that will show the nature of the film as they may be the reason that the audience decides to vue the film . They must display its convection's correctly so as  not to mislead the audience.

There are a number of convection's  present in film posters, that give the audience suggested clues about the overall plot and genre of the film.

The genre of the film can be seen in the overall colour or use light in the poster, dark or black colour's suggest that the film is a horror film, war or action film or possibly a thriller. While light and bright colours suggest a comedy or a film with a more light hearted content in its narrative.

The narrative of the film can sometimes be seen through the emotions of the characters on the poster, if there are any characters shown on the poster.
It is normally also displayed through written text on the poster ,which can give important indications as to the narrative. This is shown through a specific quote from the film, or a slogan that gives an overall message relating to the film plot, this assists in marketing the film to its chosen audience.

Example's

The poster for the film Taken shows many of the convection's of a poster for a thriller.
Unlike a action film where the main character stands in a position of authority, Liam Neeson is out of shot in a sinister pose. The colours in a poster for an action film , tend to be bright and the writing is usually bold and clear. The poster may also show  explosions in the background.

The main character here however is half in darkness, and half in light consequently we only see one side of his face. This masks the identify of the character and makes him look sinister, any emotion from him is not seen as his face is obscured by shadow.
The poster also lacks colour, in fact in the poster, is black and white, except for the film title Taken and the name of the main actor Liam Neeson, which are both displayed in Orange. The lack of colours suggest the dark nature of the film.

Written across the central part of the poster is a quote from the film this sets the overall message of the production, for an audience it also further suggests the films dark nature.  The quote has little meaning to anyone who has not watched the film ,it does however have deep and sinister undertones This in itself may intrigue them to research the film further, and ultimately go and actually view it.

This poster is in contrast's with the poster from Taken. The writing is in bold and is clearly visible. The main colour of the poster is white and silver. Bright colours make up the main body in this poster, unlike the poster from Taken where the main colours and theme is very dark.
The main actors are also seen clearly, this is also in contrast to Taken where the main character's face is masked by the darkness.

The bold writing and pose of the characters suggests to the audience that the film is an action film.

Example's of the science fiction film Poster.
[Example 1]
Posters for Sci-Fi   films have there own specific Convection's that make them stand out to potential audiences, and  display the Genre of the film. Most of the film poster's for Sci-Fi films are displayed in dark colours normally with black and shades of grey.
Another characteristic is how the main character, actors or villains appear in the poster, their face is normally displayed in the poster, but only their face, or as shown here in the poster for Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back (Example 1) where the characters are seen on the poster in a number of scenes from the film with the villains face or symbol normally behind the rest of the main cast, showing his dominance as a character. This is normally the case in sci-fi films that have a number of fantasy or adventure elements . The poster is similar to others from this genre.
Also included in these poster but sometimes forgotten, is the underlying text which includes the names of actors and production company and the film name (which is normally displayed in the form of a logo, that will also be seen in the film).

In many Sci-fi posters, the actors are not shown at all in the poster, and a major scene or event is depicted (Example 2 & 3). Possibly a prop for the film is shown instead (Examples 4).

Poster Research

The most important feature of a film poster in attracting an audience is the image and presentation of it. It shows the audience what film it is, when it is out, what genre it is, who stars in it, etc, all key points that influence a decision to watch a film or not.

Film posters also tell you what the narrative to the film is. This, again, can be seen through the mise-en-scene of the characters.

The genre of the film can be clearly seen through colour and the lighting of the poster which is sub-conciously is taken into account very clearly. For example, red, black and other dark colours can mean a horror film or a film with dark elements.

Written text give very important indications to the film whether it be a quote from a newspaper, a star rating, a quote from the film, an effective line to make you think about the film, awards, outstanding actors, outstanding directors/producers/writers, etc.

Examples

In an adventure drama film like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the character is stood looking like he is in mid-battle as implied from the weapon in hand and facial expression of being on guard. The colours are dark and dingy-looking to create a sense of discomfort to portray the film events. The writing across which says "NOWHERE IS SAFE" indicates a quest for safety or an end to a war/feud/dangerous situation which give the sense of adventure from the poster.

In a comedy film like Knocked Up, the characters are pulling facial expressions that are humourous and the picture behind them is a serious situation which shows immediately that the film will have a large humour based around a real-life situation. The play on words at the bottom which says "Expected in cinemas soon" allows the audience to look out for the release date as well as it implying a joke on childbirth expectancy. The magazine quote "Unroarious... explosively funny" states the genre as comedy.

Sci-Fi Film Posters

Science-Fiction films would contain futuristic elements to describe the futuristic narrative and the colours would genrally be silver, blue, etc, and the written text across would usually be a quote about the filmto make you think about it.

Extra Filming Scene

At this point (09/01/2012) we are in post-production.

In this stage in the film industry, shots that do not go right are re-filmed. These shots/scenes are called 'pick-up' shots/scenes.

We realised from the beginning that if we were to do a sci-fi film, there would be location and set problems for us. For example, we possibly find a creation lab or use a hospital room in Barnsley General Hospital.

We have found that, in the scene where Alpha 7 is supposed to be confined, there are continuity errors on the shots, plus the scene does not look effective because he is supposed to have just been created and left in solitary confinement in a hospital-like room, however, we shot it in a classroom.

We later found a small room in the college which is a hospital/medical room for nursing students which we did not know about before. Due to this, we have decided to do a 'pick-up' scene where we can fix both the set and the continuity errors.

As a result then, the scene will look more realistic and the continuity errors will be solved.
This is the shot list for the filming to commence on the 12/01/2012 is listed below:

1) Long shot of Alpha on bed looking blank
2) Close up on him
3) Long shot of him walking over to wall to listen (Pan Shot)
4) Medium long shot of him searching for clothing (Handheld shot)
5) Close up of shoe on
6) Close up of shoe strap
7) Close up of shirt
8) Close up of collar put down

Audience Research

I was planning on doing molre research on the Irish classification of films for my audience research however i am unsure of it relevance after we have already looked at the BBFC, Here is work i had already done towards it:

I have noticed that most films not only have the BBFC classification on them but they also have classification fromt the Irish Film Classification Office. Seen as our film, if it were to be released, would be released in the UK i thought it a good idea to also do this classification also as very occationally they differ.

Duplicate Confidential - Day 7

This is the 'behind-the-scenes' of our seventh and final day of filming. This day was a challenging day because it required a professional filming schedule regarding other actors and actresses. We had to check and correlate their availability to decide this day to film on. Also we had to properly dress the set into a cafe because this location is not a cafe. The challenge was to create this location like a cafe using cinematography, mise-en-scene, sound and editing.

Editing the Confidential

The first port of call when editing the confidential is to log and transfer the raw footage from the camera.

When all the footage is in I create an effective title sequence by looking at each clip and choosing intervals and merging them all together using sharp cuts. I then replace the footage sound with the music track.

Then I choose a nice image to use from the last sequence clip and then add the title over it.

Next, I view each clip and take the parts that are the most important and edit them together. Normally the film becomes way too long so I take out the less vital parts and then cut the whole thing down.

I then add the credits to scroll up at the end of the clip and add the music track again to it.

Then all the video and audio transitions and effects are added and the speed of clips are edited (Important for the set dressing - Time lapse)

The video is rendered and then exported.

Then confidential is ready to watch!

Duplicate Confidential - Day 6

This is the 'behind-the-scenes' of our sixth day of filming. This was challenging because Joseph had to create documents that were to be filmed for the title sequence. However, we had to film vital bits of information and point them out to the audience for them to understand the film so it became quite a challenge.

Duplicate Confidential - Day 5

This is the 'behind-the-scenes' of our fifth day of filming. This was challenging because we had to avoid the reflection from behind us because it was dark outside and the window showed it all. So we created a blackout with my coat which was the plan we used. Our previous plans had failed to work, therefore we settled with what we could do.

Possible Distributors

Momentum Pictures is one of the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK, releasing approximately 20 theatrical films a year, with several direct-to-video releases.

They have won 8 BAFTA awards, which is more than any UK distributor.

Some of Momentum Pictures' most successful theatrical releases include:

The King's Speech

Amelie

The Men who Stare at Goats

P.S I Love You

Chalet Girl

Limitless

Insidious

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Dear John

I would have Momentum Pictures distribute our film if it were to be professionally produced because they are one of the leading UK distributors and that they have distributed many well-known films that have won awards. Also they are a widely-known company so they would be able to distribute our film to a very wide audience due to their prior 50 years of achievement.

Another possible independent UK distribution company that could produce our film if it were to be professionally produced is Studio Canal (Formerly known as Optimum Releasing) because they would be a great company to advertise films to a wide variety audience. It is also another one of the leading UK distributors which means that it is a well-known company to the UK.

Some of the films they have distributed include:

This is England

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Tyrannosaur

Don't be Afraid of the Dark

The Awakening

Kill List

The Guard

Whisky Galore

Four Lions
