Titles Change

Our original idea was to have a variation of names displayed in different ways, as shown below:

We conducted some audience research by showing two people the title sequence and asked both of the individuals their opinion. Both reported that the names shown in the titles should be the same style and position instead of random positions and styles on screen.

We have decided to standardise the names in the title sequence by keeping them in the same style

We changed the titles accordingly and we believe they are easier to watch.

I (Joseph) asked a friend of ours who is a graphic designer who recently graduated from university her opinion on the production via email:

These were her comments visible in the screen dump below:

After watching your video 'Duplicate' I have some constructive feedback to give it a little bit of extra colour and theming running through.

1. There seemed to be a lack of 'colour' in the film. It's emphasis seemed to be black and white but this wasn't continual throughout the film - just random pieces of stills to black and white. However the main thing people would remember about the film would be the association with the blood at the end - only the viewer would recognise that the blood determines which person is the duplicate and which one is the real thing - this would mean that red could be the 3rd primary colour.

2. Don't mix up the titles with different placement effects - pick one and stick to it - I would say the one with the name on top and the mirrored version underneath as this is the main one you should use - it just makes more sense to keep the same 'theme' all the way through.

3. Add a bit of red to the titles - keep that red theme going throughout - it will make that final scene mean more and stand out.

They were the main points

these are the 2 new title ideas i (joseph) have created, i will explain how i made each of these titles in:

Documents for Title Sequence

Both ideas incorporate the ideas given by the graphic designer, that more colour is needed and as oliver has already explained the orientation of the titles.

Based on these points i have changed the titles:, firstly i have done audience research by asking my Facebook friends their opinion of which title should be used, it was a unanimous vote all for the first of the 2. the reason for posting it on facebook was due to the cross section of people, for other research we have done we have only asked "a level media students in barnsley" this is very limiting demographic, it gives us very little feedback from a broad audience demographic. This was the main reason for the facebook post however it did not work as planned, only a level media students, from barnsley have commented, We are still going to run with this research however it is not very concordant, at least we know students from Barnsley like it.

This is a draft of the film just before it is finished, as you will notice the radio broadcast has no video footage due to re-filming that needs to take place. A few tweaks and changes are to be made before the final product.

Radio Trailer Research

Both of the above are examples of radio trailers for films, although both are quite old ,they still show us what differing convection's are required for a trailer. Indicating areas to be considered  for our own productions.
Both of the trailers share a number of similarities in production.
They both include a voice over, that introduce a potential audience to the key details that must be known about the film. For example, the film name, actors starring in the film, date of release, and an overall idea of what the film is about including the possible genre.
Most of the radio trailers also contain a key quote from the film, as well as a number of carefully selected sound bites such as can be heard in the radio trailer above for Star Wars.
On their own these sound bites don’t make much sens, and thus do not give away too much about the film however they must give enough information to stimulate the potential  audience, to generate interest in the content of the film. All of these points are present in the two trailers above.

Radio Trailer Research

Doctor Who Radio Trailer

This trailer establishes what the program is and what its all about. When The Doctor says 'How fast can you run?' it establishes a sense of action feeling to it because running is what happenes in an action-genred production, running from enemies, running for someone, running under pressure, etc. The heavy breathing that Amy does also establishes that the program will have tension and panic involved. It also leaves the listener on an unknown riddle which creates that cliffhanger feeling to 'entice' them to watch the program. The voice over at the end gives the details of the show so that the listener of the trailer  does not miss it.

This trailer begins with the time and day of the program and starts with one line to attract interest about the secrets of the show when The Doctor says 'The Time Lords are returning!' The show is established as a sequence of danger when The Doctor warns  'You've seen my enemies Wilf, the Time Lords are more dangerous than any of them!' The voice over says 'The Tenth Doctor's Final Chapter!' establishes a grand finale to the series which creates a higher sense of adventure, action and suspense; compelling the audience to watch the show. The shouts of battle are calls to war which creates a battle to be won, or lost. The effects on the voices are added for the dramatic effect which will always create more suspense and tension.

Both trailers highlight the most important points of the production, combined with effects and music to create a merge of exciting advertising.

Poster Research

The Poster for a film is a very important advertising tool. It could be the first introduction the audience recieve to the film. we find film posters on road billboards or at bus stops.

A film Trailer will give a better overall view of the film, but people are far more likely to see a film poster. In effect the film poster is used to entice people into going one step further and researching the film i.e. by searching for details of it online and by looking for the trailer (if it has one). The film Poster creates awerness of the film, it should also have elemets of appeal to it, if the poster looks unexciting or 'dull' people won't think anything of it, the first obvous thing is a poster need to be eye catching.

Posters are used to give poeple hints as to the contect of the film, it also hylights the actors and director. this should give people a better idea of if they want to see the film, for example, if their favourite direcor or actor is part of the film. Other elements within the poster hylight important aspects of the film such as it's genera, this can be see though the visula contect, ie if it contains explosions ans guns in the poster it is likely an action film as opposed to if it contains a man and a woman about to kiss or hugging then it is more liely to be a romantic film.
different aspects of the poster govern what the content of the film will be.

Other things come into play, such as the lighting and colour of the poster, posters with a darker backround and less contrast are more likely to be horror as apposed to a brightly coloured disney film. Bright colours and more light reveals that the mood of the film will be more comedy of family based.

Many posters are also often steriotypes (unless they are comdey who often play upon subverted steriotypes). The steriotypical dress of a character reveals the nature of what thier role will be winin the film so for example a man wearing boxing gloves suggest he will be fighting. The directors often have characters within the film who they want to be kept a secret untill the films releace, these charactes are often towards the back pulling no obvious pose.

The facial exressions,'pose' and position of characters winthin a poster also give some idea of the hyerachy within the film, who plays more dominet roles/less dominent.

One very important aspect off all that i have said is that despite it being so braod as to what must be included. It must also be very subtle, posters souldn't reveal any of the plot, it shoudl hylight eliments within a film that people may like helping them to decided to watch it or not.

Finally film posters have writing on them, this reveals things like the distribution company, the director, the website and leading role within the film, actors, the director, the producer, sometimes the writer or the score maker and often the release date. Usually this infomration will appear in an ultra thin condensed form at the bottom of the poster and on the back of Dvd's it is usually almost identical to the first few credits you see at the end of the film. often this information will be a grey colour and although it is very 'squashed' it can still be read. very usefull for poster editors to cram all the relevent information into a poster.

Our Film Duplicate is a science fiction film so natrually i have decided to analyse a scienfiction films poster:
In this Poster we can se it has a very 'metal' look to it often a lot of science fiction films have content in them such as advanced machinery uin this case the transformers although more steriotypical science fiction films are set in space and therefore have the black and silver colour scheeme. they also tent to have a lot of blue as part of the make up of the metallic look to it. Our film in it's self will have a blue tinge to it throguhout, this is done dileberatly to create this metallic feel. We can see that the poster hylights key elemts within the film, the imiage of earth in space and the transformers reavelas it's science fiction content, the main characters are the robots, but also the shia labeouf playing the main character has a centered postion in the poster showing his dominence over the other people and again the transformers above him showing their dominence, it all reveals the hyerichy. At the bottom of the poster we can see the ultra thin writing which reveals the releace date and the main people within the films, the key actors, the director. At the bottom although you cannot see it very well it has a website with more infomation about the film and also the distribution campany, in this case paramount. The punch line at the top 'their war, our world' reveals even more of the film what content the audience may expect from the film. we can see it has little contrast pulling out the key blue, black and silver eliments revealing it to be a science fiction film, it also hylights the orange tinge that you would expect from an action film poster.

other examples of sciecne fiction film posters:

all these are great examples of science fiction posters, they all have very similar themes as mentioned in my analysis of the transformers poster.
